A Brief History of Newark, NJ

Newark was founded in 1666 by Connecticut Puritans led b Robert Treat, making it the third-oldest major city in the United States, though it's not the third-oldest settlement. Before Newark had been dubbed as Newark, it was previously called Milford, named for Milford, Connecticut, from which many of the settlers had migrated. The name Newark comes from the Newark-on-Trent, a town in England where some of the original settlers had come from.
